2010 Annual Luncheon
Celebrating economic development, the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance held their annual luncheon Monday, May 10, 2010, at Boyne Mountain, Boyne Falls. The audience of 300 guests included elected officials, local business owners, and economic development leaders all with a vested interest in NLEA’s four county (Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet) region.
Director of Regional Planning for the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments (NWMCOG), Matt McCauley, presented a regional economic forecast and NLEA President, Andy Hayes, presented an overview of NLEA programs and highlighted the "new economy" efforts taking place in Northern Michigan. The NLEA also presented various awards to individuals, groups and business owners for their positive economic impact on northern Michigan.

Project of the Year Randy Frykberg and Don Voisin, NLEA Board Members, present Glen Catt of Catt Development, with an NLEA Project of the Year award. Catt Development undertook a $14 million benchmark project to clean up and develop a brownfield site in Boyne City. The site will host a restaurant, retail facilities, hotel, and marina. Phase 1 will open in late May. Upon completion, the development will provide 60 jobs for the local area. |

Maniac of the Year Award Pete Garwood and Chris Christensen, NLEA Board members, presented the NLEA Maniac of the Year award to the Breezeway Task Force. The Breezeway Task Force is a group of dedicated volunteers promoting awareness of businesses and tourism along the 26-mile C-48 roadway. It winds through Atwood, Ellsworth, East Jordan and Boyne Falls. To receive this award, the maniacs must have a commitment to community economic development, be the driver behind the project, keep things on track, and involve everyone in the effort. Special Recognition Award Stephanie Baldwin, NLEA Board member, presents Todd Olson, Program Director of the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) with a special recognition award. Olson is responsible for training companies in the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments service area on how to procure government contracts. Since January 2009, 84 area businesses have registered for federal contracting. These companies have been awarded a total of $16,385,919 in government contracts. |

Elected Officials Recognized

The NLEA honored outgoing (term-limited) elected officials for being champions for Northern Michigan and helping with a wide range of projects that ultimately created and retained jobs. Those recognized were: Roger Srigley, representative for Congressman Bart Stupak; Senator Jason Allen; Representative Gary McDowell; and Representative Kevin Elsenheimer. All were presented with framed letters of thanks by NLEA Board Chair, Jim Conboy.
Service Recognitions Pete Garwood was given special recognition as presented by NLEA Board Chair, Jim Conboy, for outstanding leadership and support of economic development in Northern Michigan. Pete has served on the NLEA Board for 20 years. Outgoing board member, Scott McNeil, was also recognized for two years of service as a Cheboygan County representative. McNeil was instrumental in the early stages of Cheboygan County joining the NLEA. NLEA Board Chair, Jim Conboy, presented him with a plaque.

2009 Annual "It's Not About the Golf" Event
