2010-2015 Economic Outlook

We are pleased to present this 2010-2015 Economic Outlook for the four county NLEA Region. Often times, people need more than basic demographic information to make business related decisions. This report goes beyond the basic information and provides projections four years into the future.
This report is made possible through the NLEA’s partnership with the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments. The “COG” is a ten county regional planning organization and has tremendous staff research and planning expertise.
We also want to thank our three utility company sponsors (CMS Land, DTE Energy and Great Lakes Energy). It is through their investment in the NLEA, that quality reports such as this are possible.

NLEA County Population Changes

All Jobs Are Not Created Equal
Of course all jobs are important; however, “base jobs” have the additional punch of adding “spin-off jobs”. Base jobs are the jobs that create income and wealth for a community and serve as the foundation, the “base,” of that local economy. In the private sector, base jobs are supported predominantly by sales to out-of-county customers. For the four counties that make up the NLEA region, the number of “spin off jobs” created by base employment ranges from 1.33 to 1.65.
