NLEA is excited to announce two summer interns, Ross Hooley from Xavier University and Brad Berkau, a recent graduate of Michigan State University. This project, funded by a grant by the DTE Energy Foundation will focus on working with various partners including Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet county representatives, county Geographic Information System (GIS) departments, township representatives, and broadband Internet consultants to bring awareness to the regional demand for broadband Internet. Gathering data, conducting surveys, creating maps, and exploring funding options will be their game plan for the summer.
The project will be focused on four areas of the Northwest Lower Peninsula in Michigan. The Village of Bellaire, Charlevoix Township, Boyne Valley Township, and Tuscarora Township have been selected as prospective regions. Using the Every Door Direct Mailing service provided by the United States Postal Service, data will be collected from selected households and businesses in each of these respective areas. Once the data is collected, maps showing the demand for broadband Internet will be created with help from each county’s GIS department. The data collected and maps created will be useful tools for the advancement of broadband infrastructure in the NLEA region.
