Let’s say you have a business idea, what if you were awarded $10,000? Or as a new business, what would you do if someone gave you $10,000. Likely, there are thoughts running about your head of everything you could spend that $10,000 on. On Wednesday, October 11th, 11 young businesses were given the opportunity to pitch their business idea or new business with the chance to walk away with cold hard cash at GreenLight East Jordan.
GreenLight is the first business competition to come to the NLEA four-county region and cash prizes of this magnitude can move mountains for these start-ups. The money won at GreenLight East Jordan must be used along the Breezeway- a 26 mile stretch that runs from Boyne Falls to Atwood. The businesses receiving the funds from GreenLight have been properly vetted by the judges and gone through a coaching night making them stronger right out the gates.
GreenLight East Jordan just finished its third year and just as expected it was a great success. GreenLight started with a group of people from East Jordan that attended a Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference downstate, they came back with several great ideas to implement, one of which was GreenLight. GreenLight is a business pitch competition that allows those with a business idea or those with a young business to deliver their four-minute pitch to a panel of qualified judges. Once all the pitches have been heard, the judges deliberate and select 1st, 2nd and 3rd place while those in the crowd cast their vote for people’s choice. The 2017 People’s Choice winner for GreenLight East Jordan was Hops & Props Boat Works which won $500. The winner of the Student Award was Kid Cart Vending for $1,000. The 2017 GreenLight East Jordan winners were: Adventure Sports North for third place of $1,000, Hops & Props Boat Works for second place of $2,500, and South Arm Market for first place of $10,000. But once the competition is said and done, where do they go from here?
The Northern Lakes Economic Alliance will be hosting the Grand Event on November 14th at North Central Michigan College starting at 5:30pm where young businesses will again be competing for cold hard cash, this time a total of $25,000. South Arm Market and Hops & Props Boat Works have received automatic bids to the Grand Event and will be competing against other young businesses from around the NLEA four-county service region (Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet Counties). The Grand Event is open to any business within the NLEA Service Region that has the earliest incorporation date of November 2015 or those with a business idea and a well thought out business plan to match.
