KATIE POTTS – Owner / Cheesemonger of Petoskey Cheese
Columbia College Chicago – Bachelor of Arts in Business & Entrepreneurship

“I fell into my career path very serendipitously. I had studied business and entrepreneurship in college and had worked behind a cheese counter, and I really fell in love with it. I had the idea to bring a unique store to Petoskey, so for one of my school projects, I created a business plan for a cheese shop in Northern Michigan. It was purely for the grade, and when I graduated college this past May, my parents asked me what I was planning on doing for the rest of my life. I had this idea to open up a cheese shop, and they pushed me to open it while I was young, ambitious, and new my craft and passion. Everything just fell into line where this space had opened up, and it became a reality.”

STEVE VAN DAM – Founder of Van Dam Custom Boats

“When I was a young man, my goal was to sail around the world. I had done a year of college and it was not a good fit for me, but I got started repairing boats as an apprentice to a boat builder. That clicked for me and I am a fairly independent person, so after that apprenticeship, my wife and I built an oversized garage and we started our own business. “
