Excerpt from Entrepreneurship & Related Business Services

In the nonprofit world of competitive funding, it's all about partnering to get the job done. Every agency and organization has expertise and most are willing to share knowledge to leverage resources. The NLEA has capitalized on this concept to support entrepreneurial growth. Entrepreneurs that develop viable business models for strong markets are the key to turning Michigan's economy around. The New Economy is all about building a sense of place and quality of life to draw entrepreneurs to our Michigan communities. The NLEA's economic development and business development teams work together, providing an umbrella of specialized services to entrepreneurs, communities and existing businesses, all with the goal of creating sustainable local jobs.

Entrepreneurial development is an NLEA top priority. The NLEA partnered with the Charlevoix County Community Foundation and the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation to kickstart the NLEA's Entreprenuerial Division, and to support Michigan State University's (MSU) statewide Creating Entrepreneurial Communitites program that helps communities nurture and grow entrepreneurs.

Through various partnerships, NLEA is able to offer the following services:

  • one-on-one business counseling
  • 10 business resource centers throughout the four county region
  • access to a team of MI-SBTDC business specialists
  • access to an MSU Product Center Ag Innovation Counselor
  • access to business and marketing research
  • access to in-depth research for consumer markets
  • regular trainings for business start-ups through second stage growth companies
  • information regarding local and state incentive programs
  • annual visits to area base employers
