Plant Expansions keep jobs and families in Charlevoix County

By Buck Love, Business Retention & Growth

Two expansion projects in Charlevoix County have come down the pipeline and into the hands of NLEA. Both DCL Inc. and Van Dam Marine have been approved to begin plans to expand their operations.

By a unanimous vote, the Charlevoix Township Board passed the resolution to approve a Plant Rehabilitation District (PRD) for DCL, Inc. at their 5/14/18 meeting to begin improvements of the adjacent former Viatec Company building located at 12535 US31 N. in Charlevoix. The uninhabited structure was designated as more than 50% obsolete and unusable by the township tax assessor.

Once complete, DCL will have additional storage and production space to add a potential third shift. DCL intends to seek a tax abatement for the PRD at the July 2018 Charlevoix Township Board Meeting when reconstruction estimates are complete. This expansion will result in 10 new hires and 70 retained jobs—keeping those families and income in the area.

Following the establishment of the Boyne City Industrial Development District #6 for Van Dam Marine Company in July of 2017, the NLEA is preparing documents for a Public Hearing by the Boyne City Council to approve a resolution for a tax abatement.

At the May 22, 2018 Boyne City Council meeting, Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a resolution to grant Van Dam Marine Co. a twelve-year tax abatement on their $1,000,000 expansion project that will add approximately 7500 sq. ft. to their existing building. The NLEA is grateful for the support of Mike Cain, the Boyne City Council and those who expressed support for this project.

The proposed expansion would include an 80 x 25 addition to the production facility to accommodate larger projects and a 2-story 80 x 34 attached office expansion for a total building increase of 7440 square feet. The company anticipates 5 new hires resulting from this expansion.
