Rising Tide: Making Central Lake a Destination

By Ethan Duffield, AmeriCorps Vista Community Liason

Rising Tide is a statewide program that aims to attract business investment and create a path toward economic sustainability and growth. Antrim County’s Village of Central Lake was selected as one of ten communities to be a focus of the project’s efforts.

Situated directly on Intermediate Lake, the Village of Central Lake has the capacity and ideal location to develop their downtown area. By building upon the strong foundation of local businesses, surrounding agricultural industry, and a rich historic ambiance, the village can become a premier destination in northern Michigan.

Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, along with individuals from the community, worked together to outline strategic goals for the project. A public input session was also held to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and potential obstacles to the village. From this, a list of core economic objectives was established. The overall target is to create a comprehensive brand for the community, and to enhance downtown Central Lake.

Already, the village is making progress on a plan for a new pavilion and installation of permanent docks to add to their lakefront infrastructure. Construction could begin as early as the spring. Additional efforts of Rising Tide will include social media marketing, creating more draw to downtown, and increasing economic opportunity for local businesses.

With the support of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, and the village itself, Central Lake will make meaningful advancements through the Rising Tide initiative.
