Stormy Kromer a Cap & Ale House Honored as a 2021 Michigan Celebrates Awardee

Stormy Kromer A Cap & Ale House will be honored at the 17th annual Michigan Celebrates Small Businesses gala event on Tuesday, July 20.

Stormy Kromer A Cap & Ale House is a retail establishment that sells the Michigan-made legendary brand of Stormy Kromer products in the very first exclusive “Stormy Kromer” store established by an authorized dealer with the permission of Stormy Kromer. It also includes a vintage bar featuring Michigan-made draft beer and cider. The store is located in the heart of a Michigan Main Street Select Level Community, downtown Cheboygan, which is a popular location for locals, Michigan tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. Stormy Kromer A Cap & Ale House strives to create a unique shopping experience by combining the quality, style and utility of Stormy Kromer brand apparel with a cool, relaxed atmosphere. At Stormy Kromer A Cap & Ale House, the goal is not simply to offer an incredible Michigan-made product, but a fun and entertaining experience as well.

Marcella Costin, the visionary behind Stormy Kromer A Cap & Ale House, says, “We set out not only to create a unique and stylish atmosphere, but to support Michigan people and Michigan businesses, too. We are absolutely thrilled to be recognized for this award!” Costin also commented, “It really has been a team effort as our manager, Ericka Kubiak, and our visual director, Tracey Manthey, have both done an outstanding job making the Stormy Kromer A Cap & Ale House a very special store to visit and experience.”

Marcella Costin, and her husband, John, have developed several Cheboygan Main Street Businesses which include the Simply Marcella Boutique, The Queens Head Wine Pub, The Lark Lounge and coming this summer, The Lark Theater (a live performance venue), and The Boutique Suite, which is two-story apartment designed for weekend getaways. Marcella also has a Simply Marcella boutique in Downtown Lake Orion which was recently voted for “Best of the Best” for “Best Jewelry” by The Lake Orion Review.

Last year, Marcella was voted Business Person of the Year by the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce and the Costins were awarded the “Maniac Award” by the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance for their developments in downtown Cheboygan, which were also supported by the MEDC, the SBA and the SBDC.

The Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) provides small businesses with low-cost training and counseling support. They strive to provide Michigan with new jobs and aim to increase economic growth by assessing and meeting the needs of small businesses. SBDC works with a multitude of clients ensuring that they are able to reach their full potential and create an impact along the way.

To be recognized as a Best Small Business, awardees must be a Michigan SBDC client. Each of the Michigan SBDC Regional Centers submit one company to be recognized. Representing all regions of the state and a diverse range of industries, companies like Stormy Kromer A Cap and Ale House are known for their ability to persevere through challenging times, their entrepreneurial drive, and their hunger for innovation.

Michigan Celebrates Small Business hopes to celebrate small business success in-person at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on July 20. At this time MCSB is planning for a hybrid approach to the celebration, offering a virtual and in-person experience. If an in-person gala is permitted, MCSB will comply with CDC, state and Michigan State University guidelines.
