Career Connections in Boyne City @ Northern Lakes Economic Alliance

Job seekers can learn about local job opportunities in manufacturing at a special Northwest Michigan Works! Career Connection event June 3 in Boyne City. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance office, 1313 Boyne Avenue.

The Career Connection will feature a panel of local manufacturing employers including Classic Instruments, Magna, and Van Dam Custom Boats. The employers will discuss their open positions, company benefits, and work culture.

Starting a Business Workshop @ North Central Michigan College

Individuals in the beginning stages of starting a business, in need of accessing capital, or simply considering self-employment, will have the opportunity to attend a “Starting a Business” workshop in Petoskey.

The workshop is being offered by the Northwest Michigan Small Business Development Center in partnership with North Central Michigan College, and will be from 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, in room 536 of the North Central Michigan College Student and Community Resource Center, 1515 Howard St.

The workshop will be facilitated by Annie Olds and Kathleen Bagley, who are consultants with the organization. They will help aspiring entrepreneurs assess their abilities to lead and manage a company and evaluate market and sales potential for their products or services.

The workshop also incorporates the agency’s fundamental “Writing a Business Plan” workshop and covers topics such as determining concept feasibility, startup costs, financing options, the basics of business planning, along with other necessary resources to launch. This workshop is a requirement prior to meeting with a consultant one-on-one.

This simulation, brought to you by the Lean Learning Consortium, will inform and train on the implementation of Lean principles into the everyday office. Learn to cut waste and cost out of your office processes. With our hands-on Active Learning Model©, you will acquire awareness of foundational Lean principles and tools to help foster continuous improvement in your organization. This four-hour training will provide a brief overview of core lean principles including the eight wastes, value stream mapping, problem solving and basic process improvement tools.

OBJECTIVES

*  Define Lean and the eight wastes.
*  Identify and define the following Lean tools: one-piece flow, cellular flow, workplace organization and standard work, visual management and pull systems.
*  Apply one-piece flow, cellular flow and pull systems to a Lean manufacturing simulation.
*  Practice the basic steps of developing a value stream map.
*  Practice Lean problem-solving steps using a problem solving A3 template.
*  Identify next steps to implement Lean Office techniques in your organization.

By attending this dynamic program, your supervisor will become more effective in developing programs and instructing employees on best practices. The results will be a more professional, productive and stronger workforce.

THIS PROGRAM WILL ENABLE THE PARTICIPANT TO: 

* Recognize good and poor training characteristics.
* Determine the purpose and objectives of training.
* Develop standard work process to transfer knowledge, skills and positive attitudes to the learner.
* Demonstrate delivery of effective coaching techniques.
* Develop core skills in best on-boarding practices. 

This program features the training philosophy and principles of the Active Learning Model and provides both an online and in classroom experience. The online portion of the program must be completed before the class starts and will take under two hours.

The classroom work is a full day, eight hours, of hands-on skill development which will increase the effectiveness of the participant in on-boarding employees and cross-training your existing staff.

Program fee is $595 per person.
